Life Story for Mary Lou Schultz-Goemmer (Kaiser)

On July 15, 2017, following a brave two-year battle with leukemia, Mary Lou (Schultz) Goemmer peacefully surrendered her soul surrounded by her devoted children. Her family and friends who are left to mourn her loss will forever cherish their memories of her.
Mary Lou was born February 23, 1937 to H. Edward Kaiser, a steel worker, and Doris (Carr), a homemaker. She grew up in the Edison neighborhood of northeast Baltimore, attending the Little Flower School and graduating from The Catholic High School in 1954. Her many friends at Catholic High knew her as the “sweet gal” who excelled at shorthand and made the honor roll each year. During her senior year of high school, her parents relocated to Florida, and Mary Lou made the bold choice to stay behind, living with her cousin. After graduation, she worked as a secretary at the Armco Steel Company and in October 1955 married her high school sweetheart, Paul Schultz. They bought a home in what was, at the time, a quiet newly built neighborhood on the northeastern edge of Baltimore City. It was there that they raised six children. While Paul worked long hours away from home, Mary Lou was the CPO – Chief Parenting Officer – who ensured their six children were happy and healthy and received lots of individual attention. Her days started with coffee perking at 6am and often ended near midnight, with her folding the day’s laundry. But no matter the burdens of the day, Mary Lou always managed to find time for a bedtime story or song with each of her children.
She was an avid reader of mystery novels and had a passion for crossword puzzles and word games such as scrabble and heads-up, which she enjoyed playing during a recent trip to the Florida Keys with her children. She loved travel to tropical destinations, dancing and music, with a special fondness for Barry Manilow. She also was a longtime Orioles fan, with an incredible recall of the rosters of teams even dating back to the 1960’s.
Though Mary Lou’s life was blessed in many ways, she also suffered a parent’s worst heartbreak, losing not one but three of her children. She endured each loss with resolve and faith and the deeply held belief that she would one day be joined with them in heaven. In her death we celebrate that reunion.
